North Carolina Still Can’t Race
Last week, Alamance County issued an injunction against Ace Speedway for the venue’s refusal to abide by safety restrictions prohibiting large crowds that were put in place to minimize transmission of coronavirus during the current pandemic.
A county health director claimed that one person attending a different race on May 30, had contracted coronavirus.
Attorneys representing the owners of the speedway, requested the court to lift the injunction pointing to protections made by the track to ensure fan safety. The judge in the case, however, denied the defense’s motion. This means that the injunction against Ace Speedway will remain in effect until he issues a final ruling, which he expects to have on Wednesday
Earlier this month, the speedway held a race in which approximately 2,000 spectators attended. According to North Carolina racetrack, the race gave fans a chance to voice their displeasure of “injustice and inequality everywhere.” Apparently, the judge wasn’t swayed enough to stay the temporary injunction.
The injunction was a response by State officials to Sheriff Terry Johnson’s declaration that he would not cite the speedway for violating the State imposed safety restrictions. The sheriff expressed concerns about the constitutionality of the governor’s executive order barring crowds of larger than 25 individuals. Johnson also felt the speedway was unjustly being singled out.
Regardless, North Carolina Still Can’t Race
